Eduardo Garcia-Rey

I am an Orthopaedic Surgeon, mainly focused on hip surgery, at the Hospital Universitario La Paz in Madrid – a large tertiary centre and one of the most renowned Institutions in Spain. After my training, I had the opportunity to visit Mayo Clinic (Minnesota, USA, Adult Reconstruction Unit), to read my PhD in polyethylene wear and uncemented acetabular components in total hip arthroplasty (THA), to obtain the Fellow of the European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (FEBOT), and to be selected in 2017 by the European Hip Society (EHS) for the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons Guest Fellowship.

As part of my professional activity, I am also involved in research projects linked to the Hospital, Idi-Paz Research Centre, investigating hip osteonecrosis and particle debris derived from THA. With regards to my teaching activity, I am Associate Professor in the University Autónoma of Madrid (Department of Surgery, Medical School). To date, I participate as a clinical expert working for the Spanish and European Medical and Device Agencies to assist in the evaluation process following the new European medical device regulation. All these activities allow me to update not only my professional experience, but also to improve my clinical skills with enthusiasm.

My interest in the Scientific and Educational topics related to hip surgery has grown over the years. I have been a member of the EHS since 2004 and have witnessed the growth of our Society. Furthermore, I am also a member of the Executive Board of the Spanish Hip Society, a sister society of EHS, which shares Hip International as its official journal and many combined meetings over the last five years.

After being part of the EduCom EHS since 2017, I now have the privilege of serving our Society as Vice-Chairman within the Committee. Modern hip surgery continues to evolve during the last few decades and ongoing training is needed. All the research and clinical studies must be implemented in our professional activity to improve the care of our patients. New and exciting challenges are to come.

Sincerely,

Eduardo García-Rey
