Martin Krismer

Martin Krismer

In 2001, Martin Krismer was appointed Professor of Orthopaedics and Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at Innsbruck University Hospital. He headed the Section for Operative Medicine of the Medical University of Innsbruck from 2008 to 2011. Since 2010, he has been the Chairman of the Academic Senate of the Medical University of Innsbruck. He served the European Hip Society EHS as its President from 2002 to 2004 and General Secretary from 2008 to 2012. He was also President of the Austrian Orthopaedic Society ÖGO from 2004 to 2005, and of the South German Association for Orthopaedics and Traumatology VSOU from 2011 to 2012. From 2005 to 2010, he was a member of the Supreme Medical Council (Oberster Sanitätsrat) of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Health. Professor Krismer is the author of a monography and editor of a textbook on minimally invasive joint arthroplasty, and has written approximately 130 peer-reviewed articles.

Luigi Zagra

Luigi Zagra is the Head of the Hip Department at IRCCS Galeazzi Orthopaedic Institute, Milan, Italy and Adjunct Professor at Università degli Studi of Milan.

He is President of the Società Italiana dell’Anca (Italian Hip Society) and Past President of the European Hip Society (EHS). Vice Chairman of the Educational Committee of EFORT (European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology) responsible for Orthopaedics, Member of the Ethic Committee of EFORT, and Co-opted Member of the Executive Committee of EFORT.

Member of the International Hip Society (IHS) and Honorary Member of AE (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Endoprothetik, the German Arthroplasty Society). Member of the Scientific Committee of EHS.

He was Director of  ROLP (Regional Arthroplasty Registry of Lombardia) and he is Member of the Steering Committee of the Italian Arthroplasty Registry (RIAP). He was Member as External Expert of the Working Group of the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR) on the metal-on-metal hip implants of the European Commission.

Mainly focused in hip surgery including complex primary, revision (25% of cases), conservative surgery, osteotomies and pediatric hip diseases and knee arthroplasty.

Fritz Thorey

Prof. Fritz Thorey, Germany

Prof. Fritz Thorey was elected as the new National Representive Germany for the European Hip Society (EHS). A graduate of Hannover Medical School, Prof. Thorey completed orthopaedic surgery residencies at Hannover Medical School and University Hospital Duesseldorf. He made fellowships at Schulthess Clinic Zurich, Switzerland and Steadman Clinic Vail, USA.  Currently, he serves as professor for orthopaedics and chair for hip arthroplasty and arthroscopy at ATOS Hospital for Special Surgery in Heidelberg, Germany.

An orthopaedic surgeon and researcher, Prof. Thorey has received awards for clinical research from the AFOR, DFG Funding Program, Germany Society for Orthopaedic and Traum Surgery (DGOOC), and German Society for Arthroplasty (AE).  He is the author or co-author of more than 60 peer-reviewed publications and different book chapters and is member of several editorial boards.  Prof. Thorey has made scientific presentations at many regional, national and international meetings and is instructor for hip arthroplasty and arthroscopy.

When not working on clinical business, seeing patients or in the operating room, Prof. Thorey enjoys the outdoors and traveling. He also greatly enjoys time with his wife, and his three children.


Eric Masterson

Prof. Eric Masterson

Prof. Eric Masterson is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in practice at University Hospital Limerick and at the Regional Orthopaedic Hospital in Croom, Co. Limerick.

He is also Adjunct Professor of Orthopaedic Science at the University of Limerick Medical School.  He graduated from University College Dublin in 1984 and after going through the Senior Registrar Programme; he spent 2 years in Canada doing fellowships in Adult Reconstruction and Musculoskeletal Oncology before returning to Ireland to take up the post in Limerick.  He has published extensively in peer reviewed Journals.  He has an extensive clinical practice in the area of primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty and musculoskeletal oncology.

Evert J. Smith

Evert is an experienced hip replacement surgeon with expertise in complex primary and revision surgery. He has an interest in minimally invasive surgery and notable specialist knowledge of metal on metal bearing technologies.

His research is focused on the scrutiny of the prostheses he has developed and he studies the effectiveness of different acetabular bearing surfaces. He has research affiliations in the UK, Europe and the USA.

Evert evaluates the national performance of hip prostheses through the Orthopedic Data Evaluation Panel and National Joint Registry. Evert is Director of the Arthroplasty for Arthritis charity, which he founded in 1994.
