Wim SchreursLetter from the President, Dr B Willem Schreurs

Dear All,

We are now in full congress season and several large meetings have already taken place, including the excellent AAOS meeting in New Orleans. In April we are looking forward to the World Arthroplasty Congress (19th-21st) in Rome, and EHS is participating with several speakers, and has promoted this course to you in previous newsletters.

Also upcoming is the EFORT Congress in Barcelona from 30th May to 1st June. We hope to see a lot of you in Spain, and as usual the European Hip Society is participating in the program as a Specialty and Partner Society. On Wednesday 30th May we warmly invite you to attend the EHS Half Day Session from 15.00 – 18.30, where two symposia will run:-

  1. EHS Session 1: Present And Future Technologies In Acetabular Revisions For Severe Protrusion: Materials, Techniques And Results?

We will also participate in the “Full Day on Advanced THR & TKR” Combined Session, organized by EFORT, EHS and the EKS on Thursday 31st May. This symposium is scheduled from 8.30am – 12 pm and details will be given in the next newsletter. I hope many of you will come to this important EFORT meeting.

Now the extended abstract submission deadline for the EHS congress in The Hague is approaching quickly.
We are very pleased to announce that preliminary data show we have already 100 abstracts more than in our previous meeting and there are still some days left! You can send abstracts in until 3rd April 2018. For details, see our congress website.

Best wishes,

Your EHS President, B Willem Schreurs

Letter from the Secretary General, Professor Eleftherios TsiridisTsiridis

Dear Members,

Thank you to all our applicants for the EHS Visiting Fellowship 2018, an EFORT-approved fellowship now in its third year. (If you still haven’t applied, deadline is 31st March. Full information is here.)

We are pleased to welcome five news members to the EHS:

  • Dr Bennink (Netherlands) Full member
  • Dr Berger (Germany) Full member
  • Dr Keshavarz (Iran) Young member
  • Dr Oikonomidis (Hellas) Full member
  • Ass Prof Vigdorchik (USA) International member

Meanwhile, we wish warm congratulations to our long-term EHS Full Member, Prof Dr Nikolaus Böhler, from Linz, Austria, who will become an EHS Emeritus Member when he retires this summer after a long and prosperous orthopaedic career.

It was good to catch up with many of you at the Annual AAOS Meeting in New Orleans at the beginning of March. Now, April is all about Europe and EHS’s focus is firstly on the Stockholm International Hip Revision Course: “Theory and practices”, from 11-13th April 2018, aimed at orthopedic surgeons, specialist hip surgeons and specialist registrars. This is an EHS Course and is held in accordance with the European Curriculum for Orthopedics and Traumatology and EFORT’s Educational Platform. Prof Ullmark, Past President of EHS, and Per Wretenberg, EHS’s Nat Rep for Sweden, will report on the course in our next newsletter.

Then is it time for “Back to the Future”, the Hip Meeting in Barcelona from 17-18th April, followed by the World Arthroplasty Congress in Rome, 19th-21st April. I am speaking at both. At the same time, 20th April, the Russian Hip Society is holding the International Olympics of Young Scientists in Traumatology and Orthopedics in Nizhny Novogord, while from 20th-22nd April, it is the 10th Mayo Arthroplasty Conference in Westport Co Mayo, Ireland, where Past President Dr Macheras will represent EHS.

Following this, there is an opportunity to run our busy practices and attend our surgical duties before we are back to Barcelona for EFORT’s annual meeting at the end of May/beginning of June, where EHS is proud to be a Specialty and Partner Society and has a lot organised (see the President’s letter).  Meanwhile, Happy Easter for those who celebrate it, and Happy Holidays for those who don’t.

EHS Secretary General, Professor Eleftherios Tsiridis

We would be delighted to have EHS delegates at our meeting in Argentina, and we invite all members to submit abstracts with the intention of exchanging current diagnosis, indications and therapies to help our performance on a daily basis around the world

Prof Martin Buttaro, EHS International Member

Distinguished Members of the European Hip Society,

On behalf of the Argentinian Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (ACARO) and, as Past President, we would like to express our most sincere gratefulness for being 2018’s guest Nation of your prestigious Society. It will be the first time in the history of ACARO to be a guest Society, and also the first time EHS invites a nation, so we really appreciate it.

Founded on 1983 by surgeons trained by Sir John Charnley, our Society nowadays includes 575 members and 22 accredited hospitals along the country. During our past 23 meetings, giants of Hip Surgery from Europe, such as Mr John Older, Mike Wroblewsky, Graham Gie, Jaques Taboutin and Thorsten Gehrke had been special guests.

We would be delighted to have EHS delegates to our next Meeting in October 2018, and we invite all members to submit abstracts before July with the intention of exchanging current diagnosis, indications and therapies to help our performance on a daily basis around the world.

Our Society has been associated to Hip International for the last 10 years, and all EHS members are also invited to visit our Journal, where you can find free abstracts in English language, as well as to explore our VuMedi channel that has been recently developed, including ACARO surgical video techniques and conferences.

Looking forward to meeting you in The Hague!

Best regards,

Prof. Martin Buttaro
