Wim SchreursLetter from the President, Dr B Willem Schreurs

Dear All,

In my opinion, while the EHS congress must be attractive to you all by offering worldclass speakers, congresses such as our own are also important for the
exchange of ideas – they are an opportunity to present your own research. And from the top statistics so far, of 500 abstracts received, this is also your view. We as European Hip Society are very proud of this figure.

All abstracts have now been reviewed and we sincerely thank the many reviewers for their contribution to finish this impressive task. More information about the acceptance of your submitted abstract can be expected by mid May 2018.

For those invited to present their data in an oral presentation, we have created 196 time slots of six minutes each, plus – as we think discussion is important after the presentations – an additional two minutes for discussion after each abstract. So each presenter has in total of eight minutes. In addition, 10 abstracts will be selected for the Award Sessions.

Also, we have created the possibility for 250 classical and traditional posters; personally I like traditional poster sessions more than e posters. To guarantee optimal attention for those who exhibit their work as a poster, we are lucky to be able to hold our Welcome Reception among and around them, in the Poster Hall itself – the Worldforum Congress location in The Hague is really a fitting location for our EHS Congress.

As a last word for this Newsletter, many of the abstracts we have received are focussed on surgical approaches for total hip arthroplasty. It is remarkable how much attention is focussed on this issue, when it is a procedure that has been around for such a long time. However, it reflects the efforts of all of us to improve even this already very successful procedure. This will certainly guarantee very interesting discussions at the European Hip Congress 2018 in the Hague.

Best wishes,

Your EHS President, B Willem Schreurs

Letter from the Secretary General, Professor Eleftherios TsiridisTsiridis

Dear Members,

It was good to see many of our members at the World Arthroplasty Congress in Rome at the end of the April, where over  1,000 participants and 250 company representatives, joined together over three days in the Ergife Palace Hotel. The congress was organised by EKS and ICJR in collaboration with EHS.

The Stockholm International Hip Revision Course (an EHS course) was a great success and we have words from Past President Prof Ullmark below. EHS was represented at the excellent 10th Mayo Arthroplasty Conference in Westport Co Mayo, Ireland, by Past President Dr Macheras and UK Nat Rep, Mr Evert Smith. Words below. Thank you to our contributors.

Our two EHS Travelling Fellows for 2018, George Grammatopoulos and Christopher Merle, are now in Ankara with EHS Past President and Nat Rep for Turkey, Prof Tokgözoĝlu and Vice Chairman of the EHS SciCom, Prof Atilla. This is an EFORT-approved fellowship now in its third year. See their excellent itinerary here.

Meanwhile, the EHS EduCom is scrutinising the applications for the EHS Visiting Fellowship 2018. The winners and destination will be announced shortly.

The course included case presentations and lectures on diagnosing THA problems, periprosthetic infections, periprosthetic fractures and dislocations

Prof Gösta Ullmark on the International Hip Revision Course in Stockholm

Past EHS President & Chairman of EHS EduCom, Prof Gösta Ullmark

Central Stockholm was home to the very successful International Hip Revision Course on Theory and Practices in April, in cooperation with the European Hip Society.

The lectures were interactive with plenty of lively discussions. Most speakers were international EHS speakers, including Prof Theofilos Karachalios our Treasurer from Hellas, as well as myself and Prof Per Wretenberg, our Nat Rep for Sweden.

The course included case presentations and lectures on diagnosing THA problems, periprosthetic infections, periprosthetic fractures and dislocations. All sorts of revision methods were tackled, and the results were thoroughly discussed. 4 workshops in plastic bone got high scores from the participants.
