Letter from the President, Dr B Willem Schreurs
Dear All,
Plans are progressing well for our 13th Congress in the Hague in September with our Guest Nation, Argentina, and the Guest Society: the Argentinian Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (ACARO). I am in communication with the President Prof Andrés Silberman, and General Secretary Dr Roberto Olivetto, who share the EHS concept of “bringing orthopeadic surgeons together” as a means of exchanging current diagnosis, indications and therapies to help our performance on a daily basis around the world.
ACARO, like EHS, is committed to increasing its presence at international meetings to offer its members top-level scientific perspectives. The Association considers EHS to be “…at the highest level of scientific knowledge” in the hip world and has invited two EHS delegates to attend their Annual Meeting from 3-5 October 2018 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Their President also encourages our EHS members to submit research for a podium or poster presentation at their meeting and wants to see EHS scientifically represented, “…to expand the reach of international arthroplasty research and educational exchange to the mutual benefit of our organizations”.
We are also pleased to announce our special congress guest: Prof Per Kjaersgaard Anderson, Incoming EFORT President, who will lecture on the influence of obesitas in hip diseases. Plus we will be joined by Emeritus Professor Henrik Kehlet, the godfather of fast track surgery with a track record of more than 1,000 Pub Med papers, and last but by no means least, the expert Professor Manoj Ramachandran. These are all familiar names to us in the hip surgery world and we will be inviting them to write some words in this Newsletter in the coming issues.

Best wishes,
Your EHS President, B Willem Schreurs
Letter from the Secretary General, Professor Eleftherios Tsiridis
Dear Members,
I am delighted to announce that we are now accepting applications for the EHS Visiting Fellowship 2018, an EFORT-approved fellowship now in its third year. The fellowship will take place over a fortnight in the Autumn and as usual, each of the two Fellows will receive a fund of 3,000 euros to cover expenses. Deadline for applications is 31st March. Two candidates will then be selected by the EduCom and the ExCom after careful scrutiny and winners will be announced in May. As you know, this is an excellent and absolutely invaluable opportunity for young surgeons to meet and observe at close hand top experts in our field. Non EHS members are welcome to apply, so please tell the young doctors in your hospital who want to specialise in the hip. Full information is here.
We are pleased to welcome three news members to the EHS: Full Members Prof Didier Hannouche from Switzerland and Dr Weird Zijlstra from Netherlands, as well as International Member Dr Masaki Mizushima from Japan. We look forward to meeting you. Meanwhile, we want to congratulate several members on their retirement from orthopaedic surgery this year: Dr Antonio Coscujuela of Spain, Dr Eric De Groof of Belgium, Dr Humberto Escobar of Spain, Mr Munthir J Farhan of UK, Dr Jan Minde of Sweden, Dr Harry Rubash of USA, Dr Mai Sabine of Germany, Mr Keith Tucker of UK and Prof Dieter Kohn of Germany.
Hip courses coming up include the Annual AAOS Meeting in New Orleans (6-10 March), the Annual Revision THA Course in Sweden (an EHS course, 11-13 April), the Barcelona Hip Meeting (16-18 April) and the World Arthroplasty Congress in Rome (19-21 April). A report from WAC can be found below.
EHS will be presented by two speakers at the MAYO Arthroplasty Conference 2018 meeting in Westport Co Mayo, Ireland (20-22 April): two Nat Reps, Dr George Macheras (Greece) and Mr Evert Smith (UK). Dr Manel Ribas from Spain will represent EHS in the Russian Hip Society’s Annual International Conference on Orthopaedic Surgery Today (24-25 May) in Nizhny Novgorod. He will speak on: Limits of Hip Arthroscopy and pitfalls.
EHS will have a booth as always at the EFORT congress in Barcelona (31 May – 1 June), where you can visit Samantha to make any outstanding membership payments. Thank you to the very many of you who have now paid for 2018. All the ExCom will be at the congress if you want to meet us.
EHS Secretary General, Professor Eleftherios Tsiridis
