Dear EHS Members,
November is upon us and that means our Call for Applicants for the EHS Fellowship to the Netherlands in April 2027 is now closed. We are delighted with the level of interest and wish all who applied the best of luck.
This month we are launching a new venture, the EHS Bridge Fellowship, so if you didn’t apply to the above, you can check out the opportunities on offer – explained below by our EduCom Member, Prof Pedro Dantas.
Meanwhile, our two EHS Fellows Mr Matt Kennedy (UK) and Dr Vincent Leopold (Germany) are currently in Switzerland, travelling from Lausanne to Basel, and Bern to Zurich, visiting their hosts Dr Wettstein, Prof Clauss, Prof Nowakowski, Prof Tannast, Prof Bastian and Prof Zingg. They are enjoying a unique and wonderful experience thus far. We look forward to their report.
November also means five members of our committee are packing their bags for Thailand, where EHS has a session and is a guest at the country’s National Hip and Knee Society Congress in Hua Hin. We look forward to hearing all about it.
Berlin may sound less exotic, but nevertheless EHS had a great session at DKOU (German Congress of Orthopaedics and Traumatology) last month on the “Perfect” Primary Hip Arthroplasty 2026: Precision, Planning and Proven Outcomes. We had good questions and great discussion, and EHS Members can watch the session on demand by logging into our webinar replay area. Thanks to our speakers and especially to Prof Carsten Perka (EHS President Elect) for organising everything and to Dr Sebastian Hardt (EHS Nat Rep for Germany), who writes our report on the event HERE.
EHS had a busy booth in the exhibition hall at DKOU again and is very proud to be present at the largest orthopaedic and trauma surgery congress in Europe and one of the largest worldwide. We are also excited to be invited to another influential event: the 100th anniversary congress of the French Society of Orthopaedics & Trauma Surgery (SOFCOT) in Cannes next month – thanks to the organising teams of both events.
October was a busy month. I presented and moderated at the SICOT meeting in Kyoto. There were multiple EHS colleagues there including Dr Cohen Rosenblum, Prof Kouyoumdjian, Prof Lustig and Dr Marin-Pena. This was followed by conferences in London, Brussels and Miami, and a trip to the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association where the focus was on Artificial Intelligence. I came back just in time to enjoy a wonderful gathering at DKOU.
A very warm welcome to our new young members: Mr Aashish Ahluwalia (UK), Dr Georgios Archontakis-Barakakis (Greece), Dr Siebe Clarebout (Belgium), Dr Augusto Ferrini (Italy), Dr Zirvecan Gunes (Turkiye), Dr Omer Serdar Hakyemez (Turkiye), Dr Mansoor Ahmed Shaikh (Germany) and Dr Stelios Tottas (Greece), and our full members: Dr Stijn Ghijselings (Belgium) and Mr Oghofori Obakponovwe (UK).
This month we have three webinars for you! The Hip Surgery Masterclass continues on Failed Fixation of Proximal Femoral Fractures. Thanks to our chair Mr Mark Jenkinson (Chair), and speakers Dr Jose Nicolas Restrepo Giraldo (our International Member from Columbia), Prof Carsten Perka and Prof Luigi Zagra (5th November). This is followed by Lessons from Registries and Big Data. Our speakers are Mr Jonathan Evans (also chair), Mr Luke Farrow and Dr Stephanie Kirschbaum (19th November).
Then on 25th November our EHS Live Debate Series presents the Young Adult Hip Surgery: Preserve the Hip or Replace It Earlier? Moderator: Prof Carsten Perka, with experts for the motion: Mr Kartik Logishetty and Prof Safa Gursoy, and against the motion: Prof Robert Hube and Prof Georgi Wassilew.
Upcoming courses with EHS support include:-
- 3-6 November 2026: Portuguese Society of Ortho & Trauma (SPOT)
- 3-8 November 2026: 35th Turkish National Congress of Orthopaedics and Traumatolgy
- 26-28 November 2026: National Congress of the Italian Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (SIOT)
- 11 -13 December 2026: Masterclass in Arthroplasty Surgery, with EHS Gold Support
abstract submission deadline extended to 1st November 2026
Read our reports on the Portuguese course Osteotomies Around the Hip with EHS patronage, and the European Orthopaedic Research Society (EORS) and Association Research Circulation Osseouss (ARCO) International Combined Meeting HERE.
And finally, it is with enormous sadness that we share the obituary of our dear colleague Mr Dominic Meek HERE, who passed away far too young, but made a great impact on advancing hip surgery nevertheless. We will remember him with gratitude and admiration, and I personally cherish the memory of his friendship.
With best wishes,
Prof Fares Haddad

Prof Pedro Dantas, EHS EduCom
Introducing the EHS Bridge Fellowship
The EHS is is launching the Bridge Fellowship, a new educational initiative designed to bring together EHS members and experienced hip surgery centres across Europe and beyond.
Why a Bridge Fellowship?
Some of the most valuable learning in hip surgery happens outside formal courses: in the operating theatre, in the clinic, and in conversations with experienced surgeons about their indications, techniques and decision-making. Yet finding the right centre and making that first contact can be difficult, especially for surgeons early in their careers or those looking to develop a new area of practice.
The Bridge Fellowship aims to close that gap. It provides a platform connecting EHS members with host centres recognised for their expertise, making it easier to organise short, focused educational visits tailored to each fellow’s goals.
Host centres offer visits in the following fields:
🟩 Hip preservation
🟪 Hip arthroscopy
🟨 Robotics in hip surgery
🟦 Primary hip arthroplasty
🟦 Revision hip arthroplasty
⬛ Hip trauma surgery
How it works
The EHS facilitates the contact between fellows and host centres. Fellows and hosts then agree directly on the duration, timing and content of each visit.
Please note that the Bridge Fellowship does not provide grants or financial support.
For fellows
If you are an EHS member interested in a fellowship visit, please click the button below to log in to the Members Area of the EHS website to find the list of participating host centres and information on how to apply.
For host centres
We welcome centres with recognised experience in any of the areas above that are willing to share their knowledge with colleagues. If your centre would like to join the programme, please contact the EHS.
