Letter from the President, Dr B Willem Schreurs
Dear All,
The summer is breaking all records in West European countries and especially in my country The Netherlands. We have not seen cloudy skies for six weeks (very unusual in The Netherlands) and new temperature records for July are estimated.
I hope the European Hip Congress in The Hague in September 20-22 will also break all records, so far the number of surgeons planning to attend is very promising. Plus, as stated before, we have more than 500 abstract submissions, which is also great. Registration is of course still possible and registration can also be done on site, so please stimulate your colleagues to take the trip to The Hague. Finding flights should be easy and not expensive, Schiphol Amsterdam airport has many connections throughout Europe. There is still some space in our congress hotels very close to the venue. You can book them on our congress website. Of course, hotels with availability in other areas of The Hague are plenty and in that period start from around 75 Euros per night. Hiring with more persons and choosing an apartment is even cheaper. Distances are never far, and public transportation is excellent. So you will find something fitting your budget.
Now some other issues. At this moment, European Hip Society is taking part in the Consensus Meeting of Infection in Philadelphia 25 to 27 July organized by Javad Parvizi and Thorsten Gehrke. Our representers are Professor Eleftherios Tsiridis and Professor Jean-Yves Jenny.
For those of you who have not paid their membership annual fee, please contact Samantha, it is fine if this is arranged before you come to our congress.
Have all a great summer and a very nice and well deserved holiday.
Best wishes,
Your EHS President, B Willem Schreurs
Letter from the Secretary General, Professor Eleftherios Tsiridis
Dear Members,
I’m writing from Philadelphia where I am attending the excellent Musculoskeletal Infection Society Annual Meeting, organised by Javad Parvizi. I was pleased to see here our EHS Visiting Fellows 2016, Prof Olga Pidgaiska (Ukraine) and Mr Sujith Konan (UK), among other EHS members (photographed below).
Following our own congress in September in The Hague (20th-22nd), EHS will be part of the meeting of HOAST in Athens in October (10-13th), the German Hip Society for the DKOU meeting in Berlin also in October (23rd-26th) (see words from Prof Siebert below), the Estonian Orthopaedic Congress in November, the Portuguese Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology for the Lisbon meeting on 1st December on hip revision arthroplasty (see words below from Dr Dantas), as well as the MAST Course in Thessaloniki from 7-9th December, co-organised by EHS and approved by EFORT.
So while you may be relaxing somewhere sunny in August, make sure to have your work calendar with you to plan the upcoming congresses and courses that follow the summertime and are not to be missed.
Best wishes,
EHS Secretary General, Professor Eleftherios Tsiridis
EHS at DKOU 2018
Dear Members,
“We are O&T” is the congress motto of the German Congress of Orthopaedics and Traumatology 2018. Orthopaedics and Traumatology stands for professional treatment of injuries and ailments of the locomotor system and the motto addresses the variety and the wide range of our shared field. No other congress in Europe offers a larger platform for professional, collegial and academic exchange than the DKOU 2018 in Berlin.
10 years after the foundation of the German Society for Orthopaedics and Trauma (DGOU), the congress is the signature feature of the successful growing together of Orthopaedics and Traumatology in Germany. The aspiration of the German Congress of Orthopaedics and Traumatology was a high contentual quality both with regard to the broadness of the field and with regard to the differentiation of the subspecialties, so sections and cooperating expert associations are noticeably integrated in the congress programme. More than 12.000 orthopaedic surgeons attending especially valuate our international program.
We are happy that EHS will also be a part of the outstanding program. In cooperation with the German Hip Society (DHG), EHS will cover a hip session “Impingement and Instability of the Hip”, which will take place Tuesday, October 23rd 2018 at 2:30-4:00 pm.
We warmly invite all EHS-members to participate in the German Congress of Orthopaedics and Traumatology 2018. Register HERE come to Berlin, join the discussion, co-create our field actively. Only together we can say: “We are O&T!”
EHS Past President, Werner Siebert
EHS at The Combined Lisbon Meeting on Hip Revision Arthroplasty
Dear Members,
The Hip Section of the Portuguese Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology is organizing, with the collaboration of the European Hip Society, The Combined Lisbon Meeting on Hip Revision Arthroplasty. This meeting is an opportunity to increase the relationship between the EHS and our National Society.
The goal of this gathering is to promote an in-deep discussion on several topics of the hip arthroplasty revision surgery such as hip anatomy, surgical approaches, evaluation of the painful arthroplasty, implant and cement removal and problems related to the metal-on-metal arthroplasties.
More specifically, in the acetabular reconstruction session, the program includes the discussion of several options for the treatment of different defects, like the use of augments, reinforcement rings, impaction grafting, and 3D custom made implants. The femoral reconstruction session will cover the cemented femoral revision and cement-in-cement technique, as well as the cementless monoblock and modular stems. The diagnosis and treatment of infection and other complications such as instability and periprosthetic fractures will also be covered in this meeting.
The event will take place in Lisbon on the 1th of December 2018 and Professor Wim Schreurs, Professor Alister Hart and Dr Jose Cordero are already confirmed as EHS speakers.
Best,
EHS Nat Rep for Portugal, Pedro Dantas
