Letter from the President, Dr B Willem Schreurs
Dear All,
Recently I visited ISAR in Iceland, the congress of the International Society of Arthroplasty Registries. This annual congress represents data of all kinds of joints, so hip, knee, ankle, shoulder, wrist and elbow.
It was remarkable that there were so many presentations on hip arthroplasties – compared to other joints, there are many new developments around hip arthroplasty.
In no other area is there so much debate on the surgical approach, the type of bearing, the type of fixation and the types of prostheses. In hip surgery we have long stems, standard stems, short stems or resurfacings on the femoral side – this is completely different from other joints.
However, the Australian Registry showed data that are somewhat worrisome: five years after the introduction of a new hip implant, 80% were no longer on the market. In addition, none of the 20% of implants that were still available was better then the average implant. Indeed, food for thought for both surgeon and industry.
All these interesting matters can be discussed between colleagues when we meet at our 13th EHS Congress in The Hague this September (20-22nd) – Early Bird registration is available until end of June! Until then, have a good summer.
Best wishes,
Your EHS President, B Willem Schreurs
