Letter from the President, Dr B Willem Schreurs
Dear All,
It is really a privilege to announce the two surgeons who have been selected for the EHS Travelling Fellowship 2018. We had a great response rate following the announcement of the fellowship, with over 20 candidates applying for two available places.
The quality of the candidates was excellent and thus there was strong competition. Finally two candidates were selected: Dr George Grammatopoulos (Consultant Hip Surgeon, Hip Reconstruction Service, University College Hospital, London & Senior Clinical Lecturer University College London, UK ) and Dr Christian Merle (Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon University Hospital, Heidelberg, Germany). See more information here.
As EHS we are also excited that the guest country for this upcoming fellowship will be Turkey. There has always been a strong relation between the Turkish orthopaedic hip surgeons and the EHS. To remember, the best ever visited meeting of the EHS was in Antalya in 2006 with over 1,100 visitors. There is no doubt that the candidates will have an excellent time in Turkey with exciting orthopaedics. The fellows will visit Ankara and Istanbul in May 2018.
In between, we want to remind you of our upcoming congress in The Hague in September this year: abstract submission is opened until March 15 2018. We hope that you submit your latest and most innovative papers to our congress.
Best wishes,
Your EHS President, B Willem Schreurs

Prof John Skinner, Stanmore, UK
Update from The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, UK
Finally, having been promised for over 30 years, the building of a new five-storey ward block is almost complete. This is the first phase of the redevelopment of the Stanmore site, where many of the buildings date back to before the Second World War. Those who have visited will recall it as a series of huts connected by a steeply sloping corridor.
The new hospital will continue to be dedicated to elective orthopaedic surgery and provide 120 beds, 80% of which will be in single rooms, greatly enhancing patient privacy. A main entrance with a children’s activity centre and shops will give the hospital the community heart that it currently lacks.
The Inpatient ward building will accommodate a 27 bed Children and Young People’s Ward with embedded therapy and education functions and an external play area to replace the current paediatric ward beds.
There will also be new Adult Acute Wards over three floors, a Private Patient Ward and embedded therapies to replace several of the current outdated adult wards “in huts”. Alongside the clinical spaces, the new block will have an impressive glass atrium that will provide reception and waiting space plus a children’s activity centre. This will be fitted out with a range of toys, games and interactive technological equipment for patients and families.
Better location of areas within the hospital will reduce travel times and make it easier for patients and visitors to find their way, as well as allowing staff to work more effectively. The hospital already has a ten theatre modern operating theatre block which will connect to the new facility via a short Airbridge.
The new building has now “topped out” and is scheduled to open in Autumn 2018. The RNOH remains the surgical home of the London Sarcoma Service, the London Implant Retrieval Centre, the London Spinal Cord Injury Centre, the Peripheral Nerve Injury Unit and a thriving Joint Replacement Unit that specializes in Complex Primary and
Revision Hip and Knee Arthroplasty.
Our Research interests in hip surgery include Patient Specific Instruments for the hip, understanding failure of hip arthroplasty and developing long lasting fixation and bearing solutions for young patients and custom solutions for the failed and multiply operated hip. We are also looking at biological solutions to augment and improve fixation.
Besides Hip Joint Preservation the 2018 meeting also will include topics around Total Hip Arthroplasty in the young and complex hip

Bernese Hip Symposium 2018
The 2018 Bernese Hip Symposium will take place from February 1 -3 at the University of Bern, Switzerland. Every two years highly ranked experts on the field of hip surgery gather at this Symposium in order to present the latest knowledge and research. Besides Hip Joint Preservation the 2018 meeting also will include topics around Total Hip Arthroplasty in the young and complex hip. Reknowned faculty on this field include e.g. H. Malchau, J. Parvizi, K. Günther and L. Zagra as one of the former presidents of the European Hip Society. As guest of honour, Prof. M Itoman will report on the Japanese experience of osteotomies around the hip. Presented latest research will be published in a dedicated 2018 CORR Hip Symposium. This year two live surgeries will be performed during the Symposium. Detailed information is available here.
