I am a hip surgeon at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology at Insel hospital in Bern, Switzerland. My research is dedicated to hip joint-preserving surgery, aiming to enhance our understanding of hip pathologies and optimize surgery to improve patient outcomes. The Insel hospital has a long-standing tradition in hip joint-preserving surgery and provides an excellent research environment. I collaborate closely with computer scientists and radiologists to advance imaging techniques and develop innovative computational methods for a deeper understanding of hip biomechanics. As a proud member of the EHS SciCom, I look forward to contributing my expertise and helping to organize an outstanding congress and education to advance hip surgery.

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (UK)
Trained at Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, I have a primary, complex primary and revision hip practice in Nottingham. My arthroplasty interest was developed during a year in Boston, at MGH.
My clinical work provides research opportunities and forms the basis of my educational activities. I travel widely to demonstrate my practice, setting up the Nottingham Revision Course in 2007. Our Revision Network, providing a forum for different hospitals to meet ‘virtually’ to plan complex cases, has received international attention.
I am active in implant development, part of a worldwide development team, I performed the first implantation of a now-established socket system in Nottingham in 2009. I am involved on ongoing development with a ceramic hip resurfacing, alongside other primary and revision hip projects.
President of the British Hip Soc in 2018, I was voted onto the BOA Council in 2019 and remain on Council to the present. I became a member of the International Hip Society in 2018 and have recently become the UK National Representative for the European Hip Society. I look forward to furthering the interactions between UK and European Hip Surgeon colleagues. I hope my work within the EHS SciCom will contribute to that goal.
I have little time to spare away from my work, though when quiet, I enjoy travelling, music, gardening, (watching) sport and planning future revisions.

A pioneer in robotic-assisted hip and knee replacement, he introduced this cutting-edge technology to France in 2018, making the Nîmes University Hospital the first in the country to integrate robotic systems into routine arthroplasty practice. His expertise spans over 600 primary hip and knee prosthetic procedures and 300 revision surgeries annually, with a strong focus on the integration of spinal pathology in planning and executing complex hip replacements.
Professor Kouyoumdjian has a longstanding interest in the intricate relationship between the spine and the hip, especially in optimizing outcomes for patients undergoing hip arthroplasty. His innovative approach blends clinical practice with advanced research, including collaborations on biomechanics and robotic applications for hip surgery. With over 70 indexed publications, numerous textbook chapters, and more than 300 conference presentations, he is a recognized thought leader in orthopedic surgery.
An advocate for enhanced recovery pathways, Professor Kouyoumdjian was an early adopter of one-day hip and knee prosthetic surgeries, prioritizing patient-centred care and outcomes. He is also deeply involved in academic education as a referent for multiple university degrees in orthopedic subspecialties and remains active in prominent national and international societies. His contributions continue to shape the future of orthopedic and robotic-assisted surgery worldwide.

I am truly honoured to be a part of the EHS SciCom. I am enthusiastic about actively contributing to the EHS Scientific Committees research activities in the coming years. I currently serve as an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology at Papageorgiou Hospital, Aristotle University, Thessaloniki, Greece (chairman Prof Tsiridis), which is part of the National Public Health System of Greece. In addition to my academic role, I also maintain a private practice at the International Centre of Arthroplasty and Revision Orthopaedic Surgery (ICAROS) in the Interbalkan Medical Centre, Thessaloniki. My clinical practice primarily focuses on hip and knee surgery, encompassing both primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasties and hip and pelvic trauma procedures.
I graduated MD ‘Cum Laude’ from the AUTh Medical School and completed my specialty training in 2013. I hold a PhD in Orthopaedics, focusing on hip implant osseointegration, and an MSc in Medical Experimental Methodology (AUTh). My primary clinical fellowship in
Adult Lower Limb Orthopaedic Surgery was undertaken at the ICAROS Clinic under the direction of Professor Tsiridis (2015-2018). Additionally, I completed a clinical fellowship in Hip Joint Arthroplasty and Conservative Hip Surgery (EFORT Visiting Fellowship) and served
as a Senior Research Associate in the University College London Department of Biomechanics (2018-2022).
I am the primary author of 105 full papers in PubMed (2506 citations/H index: 26). I have contributed to 40 chapters in the book “Adult Hip – Master Case Series and Techniques,” edited by Eleftherios Tsiridis and published by Springer Nature (book ISBN 978-3-319-64177-5). My ORCID ID is 0000-0001-9517-1600.
Currently, my research focuses on robotics and surgical techniques for THA patients.
I eagerly anticipate collaborating with the EHS SciCom members!

It will be a great privilege to serve the European Hip Society as President and to help strengthen education, research, and communication in hip surgery in Europe.
I am excited by the opportunity to represent all European colleagues and to raise the profile of the EHS. I am a very active clinician with a high volume clinical practice of complex hip surgery encompassing young adult sports surgery all the way through to complex revisions. I have a big academic portfolio and a strong track record in leadership nationally in the UK and internationally. I have published and presented widely. I have strong contacts worldwide and will bring international recognition and key collaborations to the European Hip Society.
My goal would be to work with the Executive Committee and with National Reps and Ambassadors and Members of the Society to strengthen the scale and scope of local and collaborative offerings, and the communication and the interactions of the European Hip Society with its members. The European Hip Society needs to refresh and re-energise. We need to look at the committee structures and strengthen ExCom, EduCom and SciCom, and ensure that they are active, productive and delivering national involvement and input, and up-to-date education initiatives and appropriate research platforms and support. There are also funds that would allow us to launch new fellowships and forge close links between European colleagues for the future.
I also hope to raise the profile and reach of the European Hip Society worldwide. My involvement would open and energise international links to the benefit of our society and its members.
