The Hip Symposium Bern is organized every two years by Prof Klaus Siebenrock, EHS President Elect, and co-organized with the EHS. It took place from February 27 – 29, 2020. Despite the upcoming Corona crisis worldwide we were more than happy to have reached the highest number of registrations for the Symposium ever (267 participants). Due to increasing national restrictions not all registered doctors finally could make it to Bern. Lucky enough the Symposium just ended two days before the official shutdown for scientific meetings in Switzerland. Faculty and participants all could safely travel back to their homes.
There was a most highly ranked international faculty of 30 dedicated specialists. New insights were gained about hip instability, hip dysplasia and surgical techniques and results for hip joint preservation. The guest of honor was Michael B. Millis from Harvard University in Boston, USA. Professor M. Millis is one of the most outstanding experts worldwide in the field of hip joint surgery. He summarized his life-time experience in his lecture: “Hipology 2020: Science, Philosophy and Craft”. The Symposium included one live surgery from Bern (reversed periacetabular osteotomy). A video commented surgery (anterior THA in DDH) transmitted from the Rothman Institute (Philadelphia, USA) was commented by J. Parvizi.
Further highlights were future guided presentations addressing the questions whether we can create living joints and how digital tools may influence hip surgery tomorrow. The Symposium was rounded up by experts’ presentations in two sessions about challenges in hip joint reconstruction in the adolescent and young adult. Lively and controversial case discussions among the faculty members were well received by the audience.
