While our 2016 Fellows are busy experiencing the Orthopaedic Operating Rooms in Hellas, today we welcome applicants for the EHS Visiting Fellowship 2017, which will take place in the Autumn. Visit the dedicated page on our website by clicking here to find out more.

The American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons is one of the most prestigious organizations in the field of hip and knee arthroplasty. Every year they have their main meeting in Dallas and they attract more than 2000 hip and knee surgeons. The European Hip Society is very honoured to be the Guest Society of 2017 at their meeting from 2nd-5th November. The European Hip Society will try to be part of their main scientific programme representing science from Europe. The connections between the European Hip Society and the AAHKS have already been intensified at the EHS Munich meeting, where we had a guest symposium with members of the AAHKS in the so called Transatlantic Meeting at this congress. We will keep you updated.

Letter from the Secretary General, Associate Prof Eleftherios TsiridisTsiridis

Dear Members,

I am delighted to currently be hosting the two EHS Visiting Fellows, Olga Pidgaiska and Sujith Konan, for their two-week fellowship.
Having already observed orthopaedic hip surgery in Athens (see below) and Larisa, they are now in Thessaloniki. We held a Research Symposium for them at the Centre for Orthopaedic & Regenerative Medicine Research, where we heard innovative lectures on the future of hip orthopaedics, including Virtual Reality,  Laser applications, Engineering & Tools Design and Stem Cells. Finally we heard about the Arthroplasty Registry in Thessaloniki from EHS Member Efstathios Kenanidis, MD, PhD.
Today the Fellows join me in theatres at St Luke’s Private Hospital where we have several cases including a Hartofylakidis Dysplasia Type II Hybrid Exeter Hip +/- possible figure of 7 roof reconstruction; a Hartofylakidis Type I Post-varus osteotomy at childhood with proximal femoral deformity, very narrow femur and small socket, deficient abductors, may require contained liner, femur may need correction osteotomy subtrochanteric, a Hip Dysplasia, old Perthes disease arthritis, Exeter Hybrid, small stem and a Hip Joint Injection under imaging intensifier cocktail with hyaluronic acid & steroids. Tomorrow we will be in OR at PapaGeorgious General Hospital.
The Fellowship will end at the MAST 3, an EFORT-approved revision course in hip (and knee) arthroplasty, focusing on current concepts and including live surgery and workshops. Diary of the EHS Visiting Fellows
Sunday: Arrival in Athens. Dinner with Olga, as Sujith arrived late.
Monday: 07.45 meeting in KAT Hospital operating rooms where they participated in  4 different operations: 2 DAA hip approaches, 1 Revision hip surgery and a total knee surgery with the Medial Pivot concept prosthesis. Dinner with the Fellows in the evening.
Tuesday 07.45 meeting in KAT Hospital operating room for a periprosthetic fracture around a hip prosthesis operation. After the operation visit to the clinic, discussion of the cases operated and the ones to be operated next day. We also discussed the activities of my department (research protocols,  published papers etc.). Noon and afternoon visit to the Athens centre, Acropolis, Placa etc. The visit was assisted by Stamatis Papadakis, the number two of my department.
Wednesday: 07.45 meeting in KAT Hospital operating rooms. 3 primary DAA approaches and one revision hip surgery were performed.
Fellows were scrubbed-up in all operations. Discussions on the cases and on the activities of my department were organised during the visit.
Wednesday afternoon lunch and then I drove for them to Larissa, where we arrived in the evening and had dinner with Prof Theofilos Karachalios.
The National TJR register (since 2011) is administrated and owned by the Lithuanian Joint Replacement Association. It is a member of ISAR and recognized as one of the high quality registers, with 12,600 primary THR

We are small country of three million people. There are 400 orthopaedic surgeons working in 40 hospitals of different sizes. We have been engaged in modern hip surgery since the last decade of the 20th century. Recently, our orthopaedic rooms are mostly dominated by elderly hip fracture patients.

Before 1991, only sporadic total hip replacement cases were registered in Lithuania. Since that time, our community of orthopaedic trauma surgeons have mastered modern total hip replacement surgery with the active help and support of our European colleagues, mainly from Sweden.

Maybe that’s why we are the most “cemented” country in Europe. Non-cemented implants are used in 10% of cases.

All TJR surgeries in Lithuania are paid by National Health Insurance. Implants are purchased through centralized national tenders. Delegates from Societies and hospitals have influence on the implant choice, but price still remains a very sensitive issue. This may be another reason in favor of the “cemented” option. The waiting list for THR is different in every hospital (THR is performed in 20), but the mean time is about six months.

Since 2011 we have the National TJR register which is administrated and owned by the Lithuanian Joint Replacement Association. You can find it on www.lser.lt. The register is a member of ISAR and recognized as one of the high quality registers. In the register there are 12,600 primary THR. The survival rate of total hip replacement in this period is 96.4%.

The leader-cemented Exeter stem and acetabular cup (Stryker) was used in 23.8% of cases. 60% of revisions were done for hip luxation, 10% for the loosening of acetabular cup, 13% for infection and 8% for periprosthetic fracture.

The regional and specialized societies are united under the Lithuanian Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, a member of EFORT. Also some of us are members of the Lithuanian Joint Replacement Association.
