Dear EHS Members,
Summer started early, with EFORT in sunny Malaga in May. Our EHS session The Sport Patient with HIP OA was well attended, chaired by myself and Carsten Perka, with great presentations from Cecille Batailler, (Enhanced technologies including robotics,) Tobias Winkler, (The role of regenerative treatments and hip preservation,) and Sujith Konan, (Which bearing and when – including CoC and DM). We also had answers on Who, when, why and where is the data: from Andrew Manktelow (Resurfacing in 2026,) from Kevin Staats (Short stems,) and from Elhadi Sari-Ali (Custom stems). Thanks to them all.
We had a prime spot for our EHS booth to introduce our society to a broad audience and interest was shown from hip surgeons from Norway, Thailand, Slovenia, Japan and Canada. EHS visibility is growing. Samantha Stokes did a wonderful job on the booth, organizing committee meetings and interfacing with current and future members.
You have all received the Minutes from our EHS General Assembly during EFORT, where the updated, streamlined constitution was approved, as well as our new proposed publication partnership with the Bone and Joint Journal – which could start later this year. An increase in EHS annual fees was approved, having remained static since 2020. Full and International Membership will be charged at €250 and Young Membership at €125 from next year. Rest-assured we will ensure a good discount for EHS members at our 17th EHS Congress London 2027.
May also included trips to Ireland, France, Denmark and the Czech Republic and a presentation to the Ukranian national meeting that was expertly chaired by Stanislav Bondarenko. Many EHS colleagues contributed their expertise.
Our new EHS 2026 LIVE DEBATE series launched last week with Cementless in the Elderly: Evidence-Based Practice or Industry-Driven Madness? This was clearly a good topic, as it was very well attended. Thanks to our lively debaters, Chloe Scott, Linda Suleiman, James Sheldon and David Beverland. The replay is available HERE, where you can also register to the next in the series: Dual Mobility for Everyone: Modern Revolution or Lazy Fix for Instability? on Wednesday 8th July @ 19:00 CET. This will be followed later in the year with Robotics in Hip Arthroplasty: Transformative Leap or Overpriced Marketing? and finally, Young Adult Hip Surgery: Preserve the Hip or Replace It Earlier?
EHS is also running a collaborative webinar with Endoprosthetics Working Group (AE) and the German Arthroplasty Society (GAS) on Instability after THA on 23rd September @ 20:00-21:30 CET. Register HERE.
I will be joined by several EHS faces at the Hip Recon session at FORTE next week in southern Italy. I’ll speak on Surgical Approaches, as well as Complex Scenarios, Luigi Zagra on Key Steps in Planning, Marco Ezechieli on Robotic, Rocco Papalia on Instability, and George Macheras on Revisions.
In June EHS is supporting the ESSKA Hip Cadaveric Course in Istanbul, Turkiye, and in July, we are the Scientific Sponsor for Porto Hip Meeting 2026 in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. Jorge Cruz de Melo will speak on Direct Anterior Approach in Complex Cases: Where Are the Safe Limits?; Pedro Dantas on, Role of Hip Arthroscopy in Patients with THA, as well as, THA in Dysplastic Hips: A Practical Treatment Algorithm; Safa Gursoy on, Choosing the Right Sport After THA: Evidence vs Tradition, as well as, Which Patients Benefit More from THA Than Preservation Surgery? Where does preservation fail?; Jeroen Verhaegen on, Spinopelvic Balance. What does the hip surgeon really need to know? and also,Hip Dysplasia: Where Is the Limit for PAO vs THA?; and Oliver Marin-Pena on, Impact of Sports on THA Outcomes. Compatible or merely acceptable?
All events are on our Hip Calendar HERE.
No less than 34 EHS members will be attending our closed combined meeting with The Hip Society (North America) in Stockholm in September.
And EHS is an Organising Society of The World Arthroplasty Congress, which will take place in Brussels, Belgium, on 22nd –23rd April 2027 and should not be missed.
Finally, welcome to our new Young Member: Dr Francesco Manzini (Italy), and new Full Members: Dr Gautier Beckers (Germany), Dr Agata Rysinska (Sweden), Dr Vincenzo Salini (Italy), Dr Marton Zomborszky (Hungary), and Dr Pedros Santos Leite (Portugal, who moves up from Young Member). Plus we are happy to announce our New Nat Rep for Portugal: Acacio Ramos, who introduces himself HERE. Thanks to Pedro Dantas, who steps down and can now concentrate on the EduCom.
With best wishes,
Prof Fares Haddad
