Lausanne University Hospital

Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) is one of Switzerland’s leading academic medical centres and a major tertiary referral hospital, providing comprehensive exposure to the full spectrum of contemporary hip surgery. The department combines a high-volume clinical practice with internationally recognised expertise in adult reconstruction, hip preservation, trauma, oncology and translational research.

The hip unit is led by Prof Julien Wegrzyn together with four dedicated hip consultants, enabling fellows to observe a variety of surgical philosophies, operative techniques and clinical decision-making. The department manages both routine and highly complex hip pathology, offering exceptional exposure across all aspects of modern hip surgery.

A particular strength of CHUV is the close integration of clinical practice with biomechanics, movement analysis and translational research through collaborations with the BioMotion Centre, EPFL Laboratory of Biomechanical Orthopaedics, and the Laboratory of Rheumatology. This unique multidisciplinary environment allows fellows to appreciate not only advanced surgical techniques but also the scientific principles that underpin modern hip surgery.

Training Experience

Fellows are welcomed as active members of the hip team and encouraged to participate in clinical discussions, case planning and multidisciplinary meetings throughout their visit. Training programmes can be tailored to individual interests, allowing focused experience in primary and revision arthroplasty, hip preservation, resurfacing, trauma, complex reconstruction or research.

Beyond observing surgery, fellows gain valuable insight into patient selection, pre-operative planning, implant choice, surgical strategy, complication management and postoperative decision-making. The department places particular emphasis on understanding the clinical reasoning behind complex hip surgery rather than simply demonstrating operative techniques.

Research Opportunities

Research forms an integral part of the fellowship experience at CHUV. Fellows have opportunities to engage in clinical, biomechanical and translational research through collaborations with internationally recognised research centres, depending on the duration of their stay and individual interests. Participation may include database studies, clinical projects, movement analysis, implant biomechanics and manuscript preparation.

Research Highlights

  • Clinical research in primary and revision hip arthroplasty
  • Institutional clinical databases and registries
  • Hip resurfacing and robotic arthroplasty research
  • BioMotion Centre gait analysis collaboration
  • EPFL biomechanical and implant research
  • Translational osteoarthritis research
  • Multidisciplinary research meetings
  • Opportunities for scientific presentations and publications

Additional Opportunities

The opportunity to experience a highly integrated academic environment through collaborations with the BioMotion Centre, EPFL Laboratory of Biomechanical Orthopaedics and the CHUV Laboratory of Rheumatology, offering unique exposure to biomechanics, gait analysis, engineering and translational musculoskeletal research.
