Training Experience

Fellows are fully integrated into the daily clinical activities of the department and have the opportunity to observe and participate in all aspects of patient care under consultant supervision.

During the fellowship, participants may:

  • Attend outpatient clinics
  • Observe and assist in operating theatre sessions
  • Participate in consultant ward rounds
  • Rotate between consultant-led surgical teams
  • Attend grand rounds and multidisciplinary meetings
  • Join teaching sessions and case discussions
  • Participate in skills laboratory activities
  • Assist during appropriate surgical procedures

La Paz has considerable experience hosting international fellows, including previous EFORT and EHS fellows. Visiting surgeons are encouraged to actively participate in clinical discussions, present their own work to the department and develop professional relationships with faculty members throughout their stay.

Research is an integral part of La Paz University Hospital through its close collaboration with the IdiPAZ Research Institute. Fellows with an interest in academic work are encouraged to become involved in ongoing clinical research, multicentre collaborative projects and database-driven studies where appropriate.

Fellows are also welcome to visit the research institute to gain further insight into the department’s academic activities.
