Prof Tobias Winkler, Germany

Prof Tobias Winkler is a specialist in orthopaedic and trauma surgery at the Center for Musculoskeletal Surgery at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. He studied Medicine at the University of Vienna, where he also completed his PhD at the Medical University of Vienna in 2007. After joining the Charité in 2004, he completed his specialist training in Orthopedics and Traumatology in 2009.

His scientific work is based at the Berlin-Institute of Health with the BIH Center for Regenerative Therapies and the Julius Wolff Institute. His research group focusses on the translation of advanced therapies for musculoskeletal indications. Since 2017, he has coordinated the EU consortium HIPGEN, conducting a multinational clinical trial on cell therapy for muscle trauma. Since 2024, he is the coordinator of the EU consortium PROTO, which aims to develop a combined cell-based and digital movement therapy for patients with osteoarthritis and to investigate mechanisms underlying the transition from health to disease.

Since 2020, Prof Tobias Winkler has held the Professorship for Regenerative Orthopaedics and Traumatology at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the BIH, where he is also a member of the Extended Directorate.

Prof Winkler is founder and chair of the executive committee of the Advanced Therapies in Orthopaedics Foundation ATiO, which unites world leading experts in translation of breakthrough therapies from clinics, research, corporate and finance.
