Wim SchreursLetter from the President, Dr B Willem Schreurs

Dear All,

Although it is still more than one year to our bi-annual meeting in the Hague the Netherlands, the next step in the preparation process will be taken soon. The congress website is now open for abstract submission. A lot of work has been done behind the scenes, but this is the next visible step for all. We are also delighted that the incoming President of EFORT 2018-2019 Professor Per Kjærsgaard-Andersen will be one of our special guests at our EHS meeting in the Netherlands.

As you know, the European Hip Society is a guest society of the AAHKS meeting in Dallas 2017, and our Fellow Eduardo Garcia-Rey (from Spain) will be received there for a month either side of the meeting – see his words below.

The American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons organizes every year in Dallas a 3-day meeting, this year from 2nd – 5th November. We are proud that we can continue our collaboration with this very influential society, after the successful combined meeting we had at our EHS Munich meeting in 2016. On behalf of the European Hip Society we will display 5 posters in Dallas presenting awarded work from our society. Of course, your President will be there and also the Chairman of the Scientific committee, Luigi Zagra. He did a lot of work using his international connections to establish this contact. Of course, we are looking forward to see more European Hip Society members there – the AAHKS meeting has a very strong reputation for being one of the annual top meetings in the field of hip surgery.

Last but not least, for those who have failed so far, please respond to the email of our Secretary Samantha Stokes, who on behalf of our Treasurer Prof Karachalios, requests you to pay your annual contribution to the EHS. We have done everything to make paying simple, now in 2017 including PayPal. Your society cannot function if members fail to pay their contribution.

Have a nice September month, starting work again, but for most still remembering the nice summer period just behind you.

Best wishes,

Your EHS President, B Willem Schreurs

Letter from the Secretary General, Associate Prof Eleftherios TsiridisTsiridis

Dear Members,

The summer is almost behind us now and our diaries are filling up for autumn. I am off to Barcelona with President Elect Jean-Alain Epinette and our Treasurer Prof Karachalios to present an EHS programme called “Hip Developments from All Over Europe” at the 54th SECOT congress, 27-9th September. Then in October I join other ExCom members on the Faculty at ICJR Transatlantic Orthopaedic Congress in New York, USA, in November it is the AAHKS in Dallas and in 1-3 December we hold the 4th Masterclass in Arthroplasty Surgery in Thessaloniki, Hellas.

We still have many unpaid dues for 2017. Thank you to everyone who has paid, and I am pleased you are enjoying the convenience of PayPal and SEPA to make payments, though of course Samantha is still able to process Credit Card payments for those who prefer this method. If you are in doubt as to whether or not you have paid this year, just drop Samantha an email please and she will guide you: samstokesehs@gmail.com

The continued monitoring and communication of results from Institutions all over the world is of paramount importance to the advancement of hip surgery. Our “Old Europe” is the land of the most successful ideas in hip surgery like cemented low-friction arthroplasty, ceramics, dual mobility cups or bone impaction grafting, and we all have the obligation to share knowledge.

Dear Members,

Last April our Society was invited as the Guest Society to the up-coming American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) Meeting and members of the European Hip Society (EHS) were invited to apply for a Guest Society Visiting Fellowship with the AAHKS. I applied, and am very pleased to have been selected.

I joined the EHS in 2004 and witness to our Society’s rapid increase in numbers and importance over the last years. The collaboration between different Associations is growing. One of these first examples was the 2008 Combined Meeting between the Spanish Hip Society and our Society, a collaboration continued in new meetings with EFORT or the Italian and British Hip Societies in November 2015.

As our current President Willem Schreurs said last October, we have to look forward. Our EHS ExCom have intensified the International EHS activities. The connections between our Society and the AAHKS are closer, as we saw in the last EHS Congress in Munich. This is a great opportunity next Autumn to improve our relationship with one of the most important Associations in the world.

Since I finished my training in Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, I have been realising the importance of the problems of hip pathology and the benefits of hip replacement. After investigating concerns related to polyethylene wear, I have focused on the use and clinical assessment of alternative bearing surfaces and bone loss in revision surgery. Since 1993, with the first bone impaction grafting surgery on the femoral side in our Hospital, restoring bone stock in young and active patients has been one of our main goals.

I am very proud and grateful to have been selected to participate in this Fellowship. Last, I would like to thank the EHS ExCom for all their help and support, and also Madrid’s Hospital La Paz for giving me the opportunities of developing my clinical activities and research in their the facilities.
