Wim SchreursLetter from the President, Dr B Willem Schreurs

Dear Members,

Probably you are visiting the EFORT meeting  from 31 May to 2 June in Vienna, where your Hip Society is involved in several symposia. However, we have to keep looking forward, so I will announce some upcoming EHS activities for the summer period.

The EHS will contribute again to the FORTE meeting in Portugal. FORTE is the Federation of Orthopaedic Trainees in Europe, which will organize their second meeting from August 28 until September 1, in Faro.

This initiative is supported by many European orthopaedic societies including EFORT and EHS.  The course will provide an overview of Basic Sciences, Spine, Upper Limb, Lower Limb, Paediatric Orthopaedics and Tumors.

This course prepares the delegates for the EBOT exam for the European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology. In the near future I except that this exam will be more and more important in the European Community.

For the younger residents it provides an excellent overview of the current knowledge in Orthopaedics. There is also the opportunity for case discussion.

For more information you can visit the FORTE website at wp.forte-orthopaedics.com

Best wishes,

Your EHS President, B Willem Schreurs

Letter from the Secretary General, Associate Prof Eleftherios TsiridisTsiridis

Dear Members,

Thanks to EFORT’s 2nd Vice-President, Ass Prof Dr Per Kjaersgaard-Andersen, who speaks here in our newsletter about the congress, which focuses on Sports Activities and Orthopaedic Practice.

Having been founded in 1992, EHS this year celebrates 25 years of existence.  We are now delighted to be in the strong position to be able to offer Fellowships to young surgeons across Europe and are delighted to announce the two winners of our EFORT-approved Visiting Fellowship 2017:-

Dr Antonios Koutalos of Hellas and Dr Moreta Suárez of Spain

These two surgeons (pictured above) will visit centres in Germany for one month during the Autumn of 2017, with the aim of making contacts and receiving comprehensive training in all aspects of hip surgery. The EHS will cover the cost of transport and accommodation and the Fellows will enjoy free EHS membership for a year.

A short written report will be published here after the Fellowship and a short oral report will be given at the EHS 13th Congress in The Hague 2018.

EHS will soon learn which member will be named a Guest Society Fellow of AAHKS (American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons) at its 2017 meeting in Dallas later this year (2nd-5th November 2017) .

Meanwhile, EHS’ first ever Travelling Fellows, Drs Dikmen and Tankut, are ready to go to France for three weeks in June, where they will visit with Prof J N Argenson, Dr F Farizon and Dr F Gaucher.

A quick reminder of our General Assembly during the EFORT congress in Vienna on Wednesday 31st May 6.45-7.45pm at the Marriot Courtyard Hotel, just next door to the Messe Wien Exhibition & Congress Centre. EHS will also hold it’s ExCom, Nat Rep, EduCom and SciCom meetings during EFORT.

Please pop into the booth to say hello to myself and Samantha during EFORT and to pay your membership dues if you haven’t been able to  yet.

In 15 parallel rooms a total of 200 sessions will run from early morning to late afternoon during the three days – this totals 18½ hours of education

Ass Prof Dr Per Kjaersgaard-Andersen, 2nd Vice-President of EFORT & EHS Member

EHS Member & 2nd Vice-President of EFORT, Prof Per Kjaersgaard-Andersen

The 18th annual EFORT Congress will be held in Vienna from 31st May until 2nd June. In 15 parallel rooms a total of 200 sessions will run from early morning to late afternoon during the three days – this totals 18½ hours of education. The EFORT annual congress has really become the orthopaedic congress of the year in Europe, covering all aspects of each corner in the orthopaedic and traumatology fields, including specialty sessions with great assistance from major European Specialty Societies, and especially European Hip Society. Also, having received more than 3.400 free paper / poster / case abstract, a total of 633 papers have been evaluated and selected for the 72 free paper sessions. No other place in the European Orthopaedic community is such a high number of free paper accepted, leaving several young European Orthopaedic surgeons the opportunity to present their research for approximately 6.000 congress participants.

The main theme for Vienna is “Sports Activities and Orthopaedic Practice” – and a total of 13 sessions have been organized directly under the theme. Sport has become a major part of everyday life. Professional sport activities are very well appreciated and are broadcast all over the world every day. Many of us are active in sport activities at a much lower level but are stimulated and impressed by the performance of these professional sportsmen and women. For many years, work-related physical activity has been reduced and therefore physical activity can only be found in our free time in the form of sport or fitness. There are many studies showing that we really need to increase our physical activity to live a longer and healthier life.

So if you are interested in sports medicine – there will be plenty of sessions for your interest. On Wednesday, May 31 a symposium on “Sports Activities after Total Hip Arthroplasty” is running from 11:00-12:00.

On Thursday, June 1 a full day “Advanced Course in Total Knee and Hip Replacement” will again take place. Last year this was the best ever recognized session ever in EFORT with more than 800 in the auditorium. This year knee will be in the morning, hip in the afternoon.

Total hip replacement has always been a leading topic at all EFORT Congresses – covering most aspects of conservative treatment, bone sparing procedures, primary replacement and certainly also revisions. In Vienna more than 25 sessions will concentrate on all these hip related aspects. The sessions have been organized so you should be able to plan your day and reach all activities.

Finally, you must not miss the new sessions on competing free papers for best paper in trauma and in orthopaedics. These two sessions will run during Friday, June 2 in the morning in room “Helsinki”. The audience will participate in electing the best papers – so don’t miss this opportunity.

I really hope that we in EFORT have succeeded in creating a great educational programme for you, and look forward to welcoming you.
