The Portuguese Orthopaedic and Traumatology Society celebrated its 75th anniversary during the National Congress held from 6–8th November 2025. This year’s congress theme was Navigation and Robotics in Orthopaedics, highlighting cutting-edge developments in AI in healthcare, robotics in hip surgery, robotics in total knee arthroplasty and robotics in spine surgery.

Along with the European Hip Society we were honored to welcome several partner societies: the Romanian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology, La Sociedad Española de Cirugía Ortopédica y Traumatología, the Sociedade Brasileira de Ortopedia e Traumatologia, the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, and ESKKA – European Knee Associates.

The European Hip Society session, chaired by Pedro Dantas and André Sarmento, covered a comprehensive range of topics spanning hip preservation, fractures, primary arthroplasty and revision arthroplasty.

  • Paulo Rego discussed complications after joint-preserving surgery—including hip arthroscopy, surgical hip dislocation, and PAO—with an emphasis on effective management strategies.
  • Acácio Ramos explored the management of proximal femur fracture fixation failure, addressing the decision-making process between refixation and replacement.
  • Jorge Cruz de Melo presented Sports and THA: Setting the Limits and Aligning Expectations, offering valuable guidance for both surgeons and active patients.
  • Pedro Dantas shared key insights, tips and tricks for approaching complex primary arthroplasty.
  • Sebastian Meller provided a detailed review of managing PJI in the presence of a concomitant periprosthetic fracture—one of the most challenging scenarios in hip surgery.
  • Stanislav Bondarenko showcased innovative solutions for severe acetabular defects using custom 3D-printed porous titanium implants for revision THA.

We concluded the congress with a lively congress dinner, where a band of orthopaedic surgeons—brought together especially for this event—kept everyone rocking throughout the evening.
