Dear EHS friends,

On 28th February 2025, the 6th Edition of the European Combined Meeting EHS-SECCA was held in Madrid. As you may know, this is a one-day course organised to share knowledge among European and Spanish colleagues with special interest in hip surgery. This course aims to update the current state-of-the-art for different topics in a practical way with lectures and clinical-case discussions.

This year’s main topic was the controversy between the introduction of new technologies and the basics for the surgical technique in both primary and revision total hip arthroplasty (THA). Recent interest in digital learning, robotics, and navigation was discussed in the morning leading to hot questions and answers raised by the audience. Thereafter, the gold standard for uncemented acetabular component fixation was reviewed for, so-called, routine THA, highly porous-coated and monobloc dual mobility cups. Hot topics in the other sessions included the use of collar or not in uncemented femoral components and other well-performing stems in primary THA. The afternoon session on revision THA was focused on 3D planning in revision surgery and we enjoyed an excellent discussion on tough cases with the use of augments, custom-made acetabular components and pelvic discontinuity. Importantly, six clinical cases presented by Spanish surgeons were actively discussed.

European speakers were Profs Theofilos Karachalios (current EFORT President), Luigi Zagra (EHS SciCom Chair and EHS Past President) and Sebastién Lustig (Hip and Knee French Society Vice-President). They participated with lectures in all sessions and encouraged questions and answers during moderations with all Spanish delegates. This year’s edition successfully ended with an increasing number of participants and sponsoring from industry.

Lastly, I would like to acknowledge all the support from EHS and SECCA for the meeting.

Looking forward to seeing you next year!

Sincerely,

Eduardo García-Rey, MD, PhD, FEBOT
