The 2023 FORTE Summer School in Athens, with EHS Patronage, was a great success once again!

For a week in the hottest July we can remember, over 140 Orthopaedics and Trauma trainees from 22 different European countries met 60 internationally renowned orthopaedic surgeons from all around Europe in a very productive course, including 100 lectures and 100 case discussions! Of course, they also enjoyed the Greek hospitality.

All topics of the European Orthopaedics and Traumatology Curriculum were covered. A basic Comprehensive Review Course (CRC) provided general topic reviews through expert lectures, covering the basic knowledge. Additionally, a more advanced Exam Preparation Course (EPC) tried to address the educational objectives of more advanced trainees; those that are preparing themselves for National or European Exams.

“The event has been a great success! We hope EHS members will promote the course to their trainees for next year.” Faculty includes EHS President Elect, Prof Eleftherios Tsiridis, EFORT President Elect, Prof Theofilos Karachalios and EHS Nat Rep for Greece, Assoc Prof Lazaros Poultsides, as well as EHS Members, Mr Vikas Khanduja (UK), Dr George Macheras (Greece), Prof Rob Nelissen (Netherlands) and Prof James Powell (Canada), who came all the way from Calgary to speak about “Hip Preserving Surgery: Open Procedures” and “Infected THA”. Also giving excellent lectures and exam tips was Prof David Limb (UK) EFORT President.

Women in Orthopaedics were celebrated and EHS Member Prof Catharina Chiari (Austria) was joined by Prof Nanni Allington (President of the French Belgian Ortho Association), Prof Zoe Dailiana (President of HAOST) and Dr Ines Unterfrauner (Swiss Female Orthopaedics Association), plus many more (see group photo).

It was noted that the majority of applications to study medicine internationally currently from women. And while the ratio of women in orthopaedics is still low, hopefully women today are beginning to feel inspired, encouraged and enabled in orthopaedics thanks to awareness raised of the barriers to equality and the efforts made to better include women in orthopaedic surgery.

Congratulations to FORTE Congress Chairman EHS Member Dr Panayiotis Megaloikonomos and to the FORTE Summer School Committee for the excellent organization of this course.
